Plan what you build - Build what you plan
Product definition is the foundation for the entire project. Without a well written product definition your project is already off to an unstable start. Here's why:
Without a stable product definition your project will likely suffer from feature creep, missed deadlines, and budget problems. Redstone Labs has both assisted and authored numerous product specifications that have provided a stable platform for project planning and development.
Redstone Labs can author, review, validate, or assist with your product definition. Our experience can help you avoid some of these very serious problems:
- Feature creep
Feature creep is the changing of a product's requirements after development has started. This happens even with well defined projects, but happens far more often with undefined (or badly defined) projects.
Changing a product definition mid-cycle add unplanned development costs, unplanned development time, and often invalidates previous work thus wasting time and money.
From a development perspective, how can you expect to win a race when the finish line keeps moving?
- Missed Deadlines
Although deadlines and milestones are really part of effective project planning, your project plan can only be as strong as your product definition. Deadlines are based on the expected scope of work for a task. If the scope of work changes, or is not well understood to begin with, how accurate can the deadline be?
- Budget Problems
Again, budgeting is really part of effective project planning, but how can you possiblybudget for something you haven't defined well. Budgets are an estimation based on materials, time, and labor. If the scope of work changes or is not accurate, so will your budget - usually not in your favor. Even worse - some previous efforts may be wasted, thus wasting time and money.
